Andrews Funeral Home can trace its history back before 1949 when Richard M. Bridges and Wilbur T. Foster purchased the former Ware Funeral Home from R.G. Farinholt. They changed the name to Foster - Bridges Funeral Home. In 1955 Mr. Bridges purchased Mr. Foster's interest in the business and the business was renamed Richard M. Bridges Funeral Home. The business was located on Main Street by the Church of St. Therese. This property was later bought by the church and has since been torn down and converted to parking at the church. In 1969 the Bridges family purchased the Hinkle house on South Main Street. A chapel, office space and selection room were added to the existing house.
In 1975, the Bridges family sold the business to John H. "Jack" Andrews, Charles Bristow and Charles Faulkner and the name was changed to Andrews-Faulkner Funeral Home. Then in June of 1980, the Andrew family became sole owners and the name changed to Andrews Funeral Home.
John H. "Jack" Andrews began his career with the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home in the early 1950's, served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, then attended the Cincinnati School of Embalming. He obtained his license in 1954. In 1956 he became manager of Colonial Funeral Home in Smithfield until he purchased the business in Gloucester. He is married to the former Francis Potts. In June of 1993, his son Gerald L. "Jerry" Andrews, became the manager of the funeral home upon Jack's semi-retirement. Jerry started his career in June of 1973 by serving his training at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home in Colonial Heights, VA. During this time he attended John Tyler Community College in the Mortuary Science Program. He then worked at the Lawrence B.Wood Funeral Home in Hampton until he joined his father in Gloucester. He is married to the former Ann Edwards.
The Andrew family continues to serve the Gloucester County and surrounding area with the motto "Dedicated to Dignified Service". |
